Boy Scouts of America Clearcut Forests, Leave No Trace
“Leave No Trace” has always been an honored credo of the Boy Scouts of America. The trumpeted animation movies tenet is supposed to refer to ethical guidelines which preach having a minimal impact on land, nature and wildlife. But according to a recent investigation, the Boy Scouts have been caught logging over 34,000 acres of pristine forest over the last 20 years, including 60 clearcuts and 35 salvage harvests. They’ve literally left no trace– of the forests.
Furthermore, the survey showed that most of the acreage was logged to turn a backdoor download horror profit, and there’s evidence of corruption. A number of Scout councils submitted inaccurate and misleading logging plans, and allegedly disregarded rules and regulations which were in place to protect wildlife and the watershed. Some of the deals even involve cozy relationships with private companies and state regulators.

Andy Card has some serious nerve. When I heard he criticized Barack Obama for not wearing a suit coat in the Oval Office, I dismissed it without a second thought. Formal dress codes seem to me to be the product of little minds; anyone who thinks good work can’t be done in casual or business casual clothes needs to visit Silicon Valley. And anyone who thinks that a building or space can be disrespected by whatever clothes are worn within it needs to get over themselves.
But then I actually read Card’s comments. Get a load of this guy:

For five years, he cheerfully served a president who used the Constitution like an inconvenience, but that joker Obama better put on a damn coat or our democratic system is suddenly in peril. I mean, how uppity can Obama get, right?

Trial Begins for HIV Gene Therapy
Gene therapy that could immunize people against the most common type of HIV is ready to be tested on humans.
The first people to receive the experimental treatment will be HIV patients with drug resistance problems.
“We do have good treatments for HIV. That has been one of the most successful stories of the last 20 years in Medicine,” said Pablo Tebas, an infectious disease expert at the University of Pennsylvania.
“However, over time, if the medications are not taken properly, individuals develop resistance to the HIV treatments, so they tend to have more limited therapeutic options.”
Since the discovery that a small portion of people who are exposed to HIV do not get infected, scientists have been working to discover the secret to those people’s resistance and how to make others resistant as well.
It turns out that most people have a gene called CCR5, which makes them vulnerable to HIV infections. The naturally resistant people have mutant CCR5 genes that inhibit HIV.
Previously, scientists found that by cutting the CCR5 gene out of white blood cells involved in the immune response known as T-cells, they could protect a tube full of human cells from the virus. The gene editing technique relies on proteins called zinc finger nucleases that can delete any gene from a living cell.
In theory, zinc finger nucleases could give that immunity to anyone.
The procedure is simple: Take some healthy T-cells out of an HIV patient, clip out their CCR5 genes, grow more of these clipped T-cells in a dish, and then put them back in the patient.
“In this first study we will re-infuse approximately 10 billion of these cells back into the participants, and we will see if it is safe and if those cells inhibit HIV replication in vivo,” said Tebas. “We know they do in the test tube.”

Fears over Sri Lanka war children
A growing number of children have been killed or injured in Sri Lankan fighting over the last 10 days, the UN children’s agency (Unicef) says.
It has called on the government and Tamil Tiger rebels to give “absolute priority” to the safety of children and the wider civilian population.
The Tamil Tigers say 250,000 civilians in the conflict zone want to stay in rebel-held areas for protection.
However the government has appealed to the Tigers to allow them to leave.
It has offered safe passage to the civilians, but President Mahinda Rajapaksa has ruled out a ceasefire as his forces continue to attack dwindling rebel territory.

Rebel political chief B Nadesan told the BBC that Tamils “do not wish to end up in the hands of their killers.
“They believe their security lies in the area under the control of our organisation - and regard the area under our control as their safe haven,” he said.
Health officials and human rights groups say hundreds of civilians have died.
‘Caught in crossfire’
Unicef said the safety of children - some just months old - and the wider civilian population was of paramount importance.
“We have clear evidence that children are being caught in the crossfire, and that children are being injured and killed,” Unicef Regional Director for South Asia, Daniel Toole, said.
“It is crucial that safe areas, schools and medical facilities are protected and considered zones of peace, in all circumstances.
“Children are bearing the brunt of a conflict which is not theirs. We are gravely concerned for the tens of thousands of children who are trapped in a fast shrinking area of intense conflict.”
But Sri Lanka’s defence secretary, Gotabaya Rajapakse, said the numbers were exaggerated and aid agencies were panicking.
Meanwhile, the UK has announced it is doubling its emergency humanitarian aid to try to protect civilians.
‘Rights breaches’
President Rajapaksa said that the rebels were refusing to let the civilians leave.
“I urge the [Tamil Tigers], within the next 48 hours to allow free movement of civilians to ensure their safety and security. For all those civilians, I assure a safe passage to a secure environment,” he said in a statement on Thursday.
The European Union on Friday called for a halt to the conflict.
EU Humanitarian Aid Commissioner Louis Michel said: “This is an escalating humanitarian catastrophe. We are extremely worried about the terrible situation facing people trapped in the fighting.”
But the Sri Lankan government has said it will continue “to liberate areas which have not been liberated so far”.
